About this tour
- Sunrise from Poon Hill (3,210 m)
- Dhaulagiri and Annapurna panorama
- Rhododendron forest
- Ghandruk village
Poon Hill has the most famous sunrise in the Annapurnas. From the 3,210 m summit above Ghorepani, you watch the light spread across a whole wall of peaks: Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Nilgiri, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre.
Ghorepani means "horse water". It was once a resting place where traders on the old salt route watered their animals. Today, the trail climbs the stone steps from Tikhedhunga through Ulleri, then winds through rhododendron forest (a blaze of red blossom in spring) up to the village.
After Poon Hill, we walk along the ridge to Tadapani and down to Ghandruk, the big Gurung village, before heading back to Nayapul and Pokhara. Five days, moderate walking and comfortable lodges make this the perfect trek if you want real Himalayan views without spending weeks on the trail.
